What this guide covers

WPBakery remains common in established WordPress themes and client sites. The important question is not popularity alone, but whether its editing model fits your content and long-term maintenance plan.

Editors assemble a layout from containers and modules, save reusable patterns and preview the result across screen sizes

Features that matter in practice

Layout grid

Rows and columns provide a familiar structure for constructing complex content areas.

Content elements

Built-in and third-party modules can speed production when their design remains consistent.

Templates

Saved layouts reduce repetitive setup for recurring landing pages and campaign content.

Theme ecosystem

Many commercial themes include custom elements, which makes theme dependency an important migration consideration.

The real question for an existing WPBakery site

WPBakery uses rows, columns and content elements to build layouts. Many commercial themes add their own elements on top. If your site already relies on this combination, the relevant question is whether editors can still make changes safely, not whether a newer builder has a shinier interface. Audit three ordinary pages: one with a complicated grid, one landing page and one page with a custom theme widget. Then identify which content depends on the theme and which depends on WPBakery itself.

Its back-end editor shows the layout as a structure of blocks; the front-end editor shows changes closer to the finished page. Ask the people who actually publish content which mode helps them find the right element without accidentally editing shared layout. Save a sample template, duplicate it and see whether the resulting design stays consistent at tablet width.

Plan for shortcodes before migrating

A WPBakery layout can contain shortcodes that remain visible when the builder or a theme-specific element is disabled. Exporting the database does not turn those into native blocks. If you intend to move to the WordPress block editor, inventory the shortcodes first, map each important element to a replacement and budget for reviewing page content by hand. A one-click theme switch is not a migration plan.

Consider the hosted template library separately from the editor: access to vendor-hosted layouts may depend on licence activation. A third-party GPL file should not be assumed to provide an account or templates. For teams maintaining a mature site, test edits on staging and document the original layout before trying a conversion.

When it makes sense

Keeping WPBakery is reasonable when the site already uses it well and editors can maintain the pages. For a new project, compare an ordinary page built with core blocks and one built with WPBakery. Judge the amount of custom code, lock-in, accessibility and editing time. Do not choose it merely because a purchased theme bundled it; equally, do not rebuild a working site solely to follow a trend.

A practical acceptance check

Edit an existing page in both editor modes. Copy a page with theme-specific elements. Check the reading order on a phone. Disable a staging copy of the builder and estimate the work required to convert remaining shortcodes.
