Smush Pro Review: WordPress Image Optimization Explained
Smush Pro reviewed: image compression, WebP conversion, lazy loading, CDN delivery, bulk optimisation, limits and GPL access.

What this guide covers
Images are usually the heaviest part of a WordPress page. Smush Pro compresses, resizes and converts them so pages load faster without visible quality loss.
Set compression level, bulk-optimise existing images, enable WebP and lazy loading, then compare quality and speed

Features that matter in practice
Bulk compression
Existing libraries can be optimised in one pass.
WebP conversion
Modern formats reduce file size for supported browsers.
Lazy loading
Off-screen images load only when needed.
Resize on upload
Oversized uploads are scaled automatically.
Begin with the original image
Smush Pro can compress and convert images, but it cannot recover detail from a tiny source stretched into a large banner. Identify the heaviest real pages and inspect which image is largest in their network waterfall. For a product store, include a listing thumbnail and a zoomable product image in your sample. Resize oversized uploads sensibly, then compare a compressed copy side by side with the original at the size customers actually see.
Bulk optimization is convenient only after that sample looks acceptable. Keep originals or a restorable backup until the result is approved. Check photographs, logos with sharp edges and graphics containing small text; they reveal different compression artifacts.
WebP, delivery and lazy loading
Converting to WebP does not guarantee the browser receives WebP. Verify the response content type on a public page and confirm that older browsers receive a suitable fallback. Local delivery and an account-linked CDN are different methods. CDN access may require an active WPMU DEV account, so do not assume a lower-cost copy includes that service.
Lazy loading is useful below the fold but can delay the first important image if applied indiscriminately. Exclude the primary visible image when appropriate and test on a slow phone connection. Also check whether your theme or host already provides lazy loading or conversion to avoid competing transformations.
Value for media-heavy sites
An image-rich blog or catalogue with years of large uploads may benefit from bulk processing and future-upload rules. A site whose images are already properly sized and served in modern formats may gain little. Judge the plugin by delivered file size, appearance and load behaviour, not by a promised compression percentage. Confirm which cloud processing, CDN and support features require vendor activation before choosing an access route.
A practical acceptance check
Test photographs, logos and text-heavy graphics. Retain originals until approved. Confirm that browsers receive the intended format. Avoid lazy loading the first visible image.
